THE STORY
Tiananamen is an original musical that follows the story of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, with newer, contemporary flourishes. With the onset of a new “Cold War” between the United States and China and authoritarian tendencies rising around the world, Tiananmen is a timely and critical musical for the modern era.
THE PROGRESS
The first 29-hour reading of Tiananmen took place September 2021 in New York City. A second reading took place a year later in New York City. The World Premiere is scheduled for October 6, 2023 at The Phoenix Theatre Company, a 103-year-old organization where Steven Spielberg debuted his first film.
THE GOAL
To remind the world how world history almost changed, and still may change, as a result of brave voices for democracy.
THE REASON
Tiananmen The Musical educates those who don’t know and remembers and mourns with those who do, all while Communist China attempts to eliminate Tiananmen from memories.
